UNDERSTANDING BIOFILMS
Biofilms are resilient, living communities of microorganisms including legionella and
pseudomonas aeruginosa which produce a protective slimy layer called a biofilm. The biofilm will quickly attach itself to many swimming pool, spa and hot tub surfaces and is resistant to chlorine even at high levels.
Are Biofilms harmful?
Potentially very, pathogens such as pseudomonas aerginosa, legionella, Giardia are locked and protected inside the Biofilm. But when water chemistry, temperature, pressure, or flow changes, these very dangerous pathogens can break loose.
Where does it grow?
Swimming pools, Spas and Hot tubs offer the perfect warm high nutrient environment for
biofilms to grow. Biofilms attach themselves to internal pipework and skimmers, fittings
including lights, safety covers, floor wall and step surfaces, scum troughs and gulleys, balance tanks, cartridge filters, filter media, showers and even tile grout. The oil, skin, sweat and other pollution from bathers along with an increased water temperature provides an ideal recipe for Biofilms to thrive
