Performing a simple maintenance check on the electrode before each use can bring peace of mind on reliability.
Don’t forget to check the electrolyte level before usage for correct electrode function ability. It will encourage maximum performance of the electrode by guaranteeing adequate head pressure to keep the liquid junction flowing.
If the level is low, select the proper electrolyte solution compatible with the electrode and top up as required. Some electrolyte solutions are available in US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliant bottles. (Scroll down for more information).
Hanna Instruments-8071 Electrolyte Fill Solution, 3.5M KCl + AgCl (FDA 30 ml x 4)
Hanna Instruments-8071 is a pH and ORP Electrode Fill Solution containing 3.5M Potassium Chloride (KCl) plus Silver Chloride (AgCl), available in US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) accredited 30ml bottles x 4, specifically made for single junction electrodes.

pH and ORP electrodes are available with a single junction or double junction reference cell. The single junction reference electrode is made with a silver (Ag) wire coated with silver chloride (AgCl). This wire is in contact with the sample to be measured by a fill solution which flows through the junction. In single junction electrodes, this fill solution is 3.5M KCl with AgCl which ensures optimum measurement performance from the single junction pH or ORP electrode.
Double junction pH and ORP electrodes will require 3.5M Potassium Chloride refill (Hanna Instruments-7082), because it has two chambers. The inner chamber has the Ag/AgCL reference wire with a fill solution of KCl plus AgCl, while the outer chamber has a KCl fill solution providing a Silver-free solution. This is important as Silver can precipitate easily in the presence of heavy metals and block the outer reference junction resulting in a longer response time and poor performance.
