Phosphates are a natural product of the breakdown of plant matter. If phosphates are left to accumulate unchecked, then a process of eutrophication can occur. This is where the water becomes oversaturated with nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. This excess of phosphorus containing materials stimulates the excess growth of algae and can lead to large algal blooms forming. These algal blooms can turn the water green but most importantly are toxic to humans if left to accumulate.
