Check₂O Aquarium Nitrate

6.4 - 6.8 - 7.2 - 7.6 - 8.0 - 8.4

Nitrate is formed by conversion of nitrite via nitrifying bacteria on the biofilter. Except in very high concentrations, nitrate is nontoxic to aquatic life. This nitrate can be removed in two different ways. Nitrates are important nutrients for plants and can be absorbed by any aquatic plants that are in the environment. Nitrates can also be removed on the biofilter by denitrifying bacteria via a conversion to nitrogen gas. Starting from ammonia this is known as the nitrogen cycle. In a stable aquarium, conversion of ammonia through to nitrogen gas should proceed without any detectable problems.

Nitrite is also extremely toxic to aquatic life. Nitrite is formed by the conversion of ammonia via nitrifying bacteria on biofilters. Ideally, no nitrite should be present in aquariums but 0.75ppm is the level where stress is induced. Nitrite is removed from aquariums via the same biofilter and nitrifying bacteria by conversion to nitrate, but this takes time. Nitrite is usually removed via a complete water change.
